Also known as alternative rap, alternative hip hop was born in the United States in the late 1980’s. Deriving majority of its musical inspiration from folk, jazz, soul, funk, reggae and rock music, alternative hip hop offers a fresh sound that is very distinct from the mainstream hip hop. Instead of complying with prominent hip hop traditions like gangsta or party rap, alternative hip hop borrows elements from pop, rock and many other genres. Thus achieving mainstream status, alternative hip hop offers a rebellious and unique experience to hip hop listeners. See our alternative hip hop archive below to further explore this subgenre.
