Born in the second half of the 1950’s, pop music has its cultural origins in the United States and United Kingdom. First introduced as “popular music,” pop music was almost synonymous with rock music in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Later pop music took a more commercial route and diverged from rock sound, thus these two genres were separated. After hip hop and rap managed to be part of the mainstream, pop music and popular music were set apart as two different notions. Today, pop music refers to easy-to-listen, often upbeat songs that derive their inspiration from rock, dance, country, Latin and urban music.
