Born in the late 19th century New Orleans, jazz is not only a musical genre but a culture. Inspired by marches, folk music and classical music, jazz combines West African musical traditions with the elements of blues and ragtime. The most prominent characteristics of jazz music are complex chords, appreciation of improvisation and polyrhythms along with call and response vocals. Jazz has spread all around the world and incorporated different local musical traditions and influences, thus giving birth to many subgenres including but not limited to cool jazz, swing, soul jazz, smooth jazz, Latin jazz, bebop and gypsy jazz.
