Born in the 1990’s Atlanta, United States, trap is a very popular subgenre of hip hop music. Inspired by gangsta rap, crunk and southern hip hop, trap music often employs digital instruments like synthesizer, drum machine and sampler. Named after Atlanta slang word “trap” (a place where recreational drugs are sold illegally), lyrical themes of the genre include street life, gang related activities, violence, vehicles, money, and drugs. Characterized by grimy melodies, hi-hats, rhythmic snares, symphonic use of keyboard, string or woodwind instruments, trap music successfully creates a dark, energetic, vivid and captivating atmosphere.
