Reggae was born in Jamaica in the late 1960’s. Today, the term is also used for modern Jamaican music and the music of Jamaican diaspora. Toots and the Maytals’ 1968 single Do the Reggay was the song that named and introduced this genre to masses all around the world. Having its stylistic origins at mento, soul, Burru, calypso, ska, R&B, rocksteady, nyabinghi, traditional African music and jazz, reggae is a politically and emotionally charged music genre: Reggae lyrics often make social and political commentary while referring to current events, news, gossip, Pan Africanism and Rastafari religion. Famous for its offbeat rhythm section, reggae offers unique dance tracks. See our library below to discover!
