Also known as rhythm and blues, R&B has its roots in 1940’s United States. Initially, the term R&B was used to refer to the recordings mainly sold to urban African Americans. In time, R&B turned into a distinct musical genre characterized by the use of piano, drums, saxophones, guitars and bass. As it was originated in the African American community, R&B’s lyrics predominantly focus on African American experience, quest for freedom, relationships, aspirations, economics and politics. Inspired by jazz, blues, gospel music, swing and boogie-woogie, R&B has a unique sound. Discover it in our library below.
