Meaning misshapen pearl in Portuguese, baroque is an umbrella term that is used to refer to the Western works of art created between 1600 and 1750. Following Rococo and preceding Renaissance Art, baroque art is known for its grandeur and flamboyant style. A major portion of Western classical music is in baroque style. Characterized by the creation of common-practice tonality, baroque music is divided in three major phases: Early, middle, and late. The particular interest in harmony is the most prominent feature of early baroque while middle baroque is defined by the emergence of new vocal styles. Finally, late baroque is shaped by some of the most famous classical composers like Handel, Bach, Vivaldi and Zelenka. Browse our baroque library to discover the fascinating melody of this genre.
